typeface portraits for racism poster.

I had a slight epiphany yesterday to do with information graphics unit, I was sure I had it all under control and I was ahead of time - in my head I knew what my poster was going to look like. I was so wrong, I was doing something that wasn't really an interest and had nothing to do with me. I felt the need to get slightly personal so I thought about my nationality and it's stereotypes along with the British and how they can be racist towards the polish and why, I wrote many things down in my sketchbook with a million ideas a minute, then somehow I thought about how strong typography can be.
I was going to have offensive words towards Poles that the British have said in the past - but to have a stronger effect I was going to write them in Polish, in the shape of the words "GO HOME" - still want to try that idea, but then I thought of using a portrait and making it out of typography. After a very long 2 hours of trying to figure it out - kind of got it, but it is still not as good as I would like it to be.

This one I made using a very simple approach - not successful. I changed a portrait of Dominika (makes sense because she is Polish) into black and white then created a slight vignette with the brush tool, then I put type over her face and changed opacity to 50% and put it under the layer of the brush tool. It looks very amateur so I am not going to do it that way.

This was done using the complicated way that I can't even describe at this moment in time, but I will use this method again to perfect it because it looks a lot more professional and looks soooo much better. I want the poster to have the writing "Racism isn't always straightforward." because it isn't ordinary white against black racism, It's saying words such as "Go home and stop stealing our jobs" to people like me and my friend Dominika, it's slightly different and not as straightforward. They say these things without realising it wasn't in our intention to even move here in the first place, since we were only like 7 and 8. Grew up here as well so we feel Scottish rather than Polish. People also don't think that racism applies to people who are the same colour/race - it definitely does. And this is what I am trying to get across through this poster. It's black and white and rather subtle to represent how minor these kinds of racism seem to people but they are just as bad as any other kind. The colours and faded feel makes this poster have a rather sad mood which is good.
