Elizabeth Owlen - surface pattern (i don't have printer credit so I put them in here)

Elizabeth Owlen’s designs are very romantic and botanically based, her inspiration is the world around her and she aims to leave something behind with every step she takes, hence she has so many different designs. The 4 that I have chosen here are my favourite of her designs.

I enjoy the way the repeat pattern flows between the seeds/flowers filling in the space. The little light dots in the background give the impression of starts and it feels like looking up at the sky through these flowing branches. The colours contrast – however she used very soft shades of blue and orange which gives a very delicate feel to the whole design.

It is a lot harder than it looks to make a successful surface pattern and this one being so busy in particular, Elizabeth Owlen has a very good sense of composition as she can make such a busy pattern look so delicate. This one is like a happy forest and all the plants are dancing. Colour scheme I really like, it’s like a very wild scene made very subtle due to the softness of the colour palette.

This one feels a lot more detailed and darker than the other ones, there is more going on. Even though she used at least 6 different colours she has managed to keep it neat and avoid making it look cluttered, I think working in colour is very difficult especially in so many different colours as you have to be able to have the control not to over use them and know how much of each colour you need to make it successful.

Again, so different from the other ones, her patterns stay interesting as there is a good variety. This one is vegetable based – would be perfect as a kitchen towel. It being on a white background makes it seems more abstract than the others and it is also big vegetables lined up.
