Richard Hamilton - 'Reaper' Print Report
Richard Hamilton (born in 1922 and died in 2011) was a British print maker who was part of the Independent Group, formed in the 1950s whose symposiums contributed of the development of Pop Art in Britain.
This print is from the 'Reaper' series :
The 'Reaper' series was inspired by the book named 'Mechanization Takes Command' by Giedion.
This print is very simplified and mostly single-lined, there are visible shadow marks but not many, the single lines dominate the image. The imagine is mostly white, the whole of the background is plain and without texture. Line is the main visual element in this print. Lines are pointing and going towards many different parts of this print, the lines are very sharp and defined. It is a fairly busy image and it is hard to understand how this 'machine' works and what is going on.
