Honore Daumier - '3rd Class Carriage' Realism Report

This painting by Daumier, was painted to convey a truth in the Realism period, it was a reaction to the dramatic paintings of Romanticism movement to show the real life simplicity and non-excitement. Artist's back then, were highly influenced by what was going on in the world, it was a lot more urgent than expressing their own feelings through art.

An everyday situation, a bunch of people sitting in a carriage, all experiencing real life struggles, not smiling, looking down - that represents a cold atmosphere. People are not excited and looking proud, like in Romanticism paintings of that time, this was the exact opposite. The dominant image is an elderly lady holding a basket, probably with shopping in it; a young girl carrying a baby in her arms and a boy that looks like he's sleeping on his way back home from school. It is not an imagine that is meant to excite or worry the viewer, it's just there because that's exactly what happened. A cold pallet of colours used represents the simplicity of this situation. The composition shows that there are things going on outside of the dominant image, everybody is there in the same carriage, casually travelling somewhere. The sad reality of this painting contrasts with paintings from Romanticism period.
